Rainbow Stage Music Theatre Conservatory

“The Rainbow Stage Music Theatre Conservatory provides young, emerging and mid-career music theatre practitioners essential, hands on work experience in a professional environment and a deeper understanding of professional practices by working with some of the brightest creative visionaries from the Manitoban, Canadian, and international musical theatre arts community.”

– Ray Hogg, Artistic Director, Rainbow Stage

The Rainbow Stage Music Theatre Conservatory was created by Artistic Director Ray Hogg in 2012/2013 with the intention of becoming an international learning hub addressing the lack of post-graduate training in the Music Theatre Arts in Canada. From directors to wig makers, conductors to set designers, and actors to stage managers The Rainbow Stage Music Theatre Conservatory provides paid, applied post-graduate training and free professional development opportunities in Winnipeg. The emphasis is on providing support to emerging artistic voices by removing financial barriers to continued training, bridging gaps in practical knowledge, providing mentorship with regards to career management, and pairing Manitoban artists with arts leaders from around the world.

We do this through four distinct programs:

  • Creative Mentorship Program (Artist-in-Residence & Creative Apprentices) This paid program pairs a mid-career Resident Artist and an emerging Apprentice Artist with the Director, Choreographer & Conductor of each show in the season with an emphasis on elements of artistic development and creation.
  • Production Mentorship Program (Production Apprentices) This paid program pairs an emerging Apprentice stage manager, designer, props maker, wig maker, electrician, and carpenter with lead hands in each show in the season with an emphasis on elements of technical design and production.
  • Artist Training & Professional Development Program Free Community Workshops feature classes in dancing, singing and acting technique, music theatre repertoire, panel discussions, symposia, and lecture/demonstrations. The paid Actor’s Intensive provides elite, post-graduate level training to a talented group of promising emerging professional artists selected by Artistic Director Ray Hogg.
  • Scholarships & School Awards Four Post-Secondary Scholarships are offered to young Manitoban artists in their final year of high school who have been accepted into a theatre arts post-secondary training program. Five School Performance Awards are awarded to three high schools and two middle schools for excellence in production. The award is open to any Winnipeg-area school for the purpose of recognizing the achievement of its musical theatre program and for investing in its upcoming musical theatre production.
